What you need to know
- If you’ve sent a protected file to someone without giving them read permission, they’ll not be able to open it. They’ll see an option to request access from the file owner and people with Share permission on the file.
- The file owner and people with Share permissions on the file will receive an access request notification by email. They can then remotely accept or decline such requests.
- If the request is approved, the recipient will receive a confirmation email letting them know that their request is approved.

Step-by-step
Only the file owner and people with Share permissions on the file will receive an access request notification by email. If the request is approved, the recipient will receive a confirmation email letting them know that their request is approved.
Note that the ‘Approve’ link in the email is valid for 30 days, which means you can come back and approve this access request within 30 days of receiving it.
